In the heart of Braddon, Coggans Village will reimagine a local landmark for a new generation. At its centre, the beloved 1920s Coggan’s Bakery will be meticulously restored, with its iconic red brickwork and classical detailing celebrated as the soul of the precinct. This carefully considered restoration will honour the site’s legacy while setting the tone for a place built on connection, character and community.
A TIMELESS ICON
REBORN
Established in 1925, Coggan’s Bakery was a cornerstone of Canberra’s early industrial beginnings.
Designed by architect James W. Sproule, the bakery served the city for over six decades, becoming one of its first local producers. Today, its Inter-War Stripped Classical façade remains a much-loved landmark and a symbol of Braddon’s heritage.
Braddon, 1968
Today, Braddon is known as one of Canberra’s most dynamic inner-city precincts — a neighbourhood rich in culture, creativity and culinary flair.
Long before the laneway dining and espresso bars, Coggans Bakery was laying the foundations — opening in 1925 as the first bakery in Canberra.
Nearly a century later, the site is ready to rise again, as a landmark reborn in the heart of a community that continues to shape the city’s story.
While plans are still evolving, the vision is clear: to create a destination that feels grounded in history yet open to possibility. The precinct will become a welcoming place for locals and visitors alike. We invite you to follow the journey and be part of what’s to come.
Coggans Village will grow into a vibrant urban precinct that balances heritage with modern life.
